With another summer ravaged by forest fires, one cannot help but wonder what can be done about it. How can we, as stewards of the earth, help with the issues of climate change?
I have compiled a short list of creative solutions that are easy to do, based on the steps of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
But first, let’s take a look at those steps! They are in that order for a reason. The biggest impact an individual can have is to Reduce their overall consumption. Next is line is to Reuse: a lot of goods get thrown away into a landfill when they are still usable! Consider the actual lifespan of an item, can it be reused again, or donated? Lastly, Recycle to reduce the amount of trash going into our landfills.
Unsubscribe from Junk Mail. This is a big irk of mine. If anyone has ever been to an apartment complex, or even your own recycling bin, to see that it is filled with junk mail? Imagine how much deforestation, pollution, transportation costs are involved to just generate trash? Check out some of the links below to help speed the process:

Join a Local Buy Nothing Club. This is a hyper-local group, often using the Facebook platform, to give away items for free to be reused. This prevents items from going into the landfill and have their life extended. Some items that have been given away in my group include: brand new clothes, digital camera, Iphones, and furniture. This project is extended all over the world, so you should be able to find a group near you.
You Can Recycle Nearly Everything. Think of items that normally go straight into the landfill: toothbrushes, cigarettes, Caprisun pouches, chip bags… all of these are actually recyclable! Check out TerraCycle to learn about what you can recycle for free and to find a drop off location near you!
